Hay is the budget line that surprises new goat keepers. Grain looks expensive in the feed-store aisle; a winter stack of small squares quietly costs more. Our planning rates are simple on purpose: 3% of body weight per day for dry or meat-maintenance animals, and 4% for dairy does in milk — the middle of the familiar 3–4% forage rule. Work the math for a 130-lb dairy doe, then scale with the goat feed & hay calculator.

The body-weight rule, step by step

Take a typical dairy doe at 130 lb (our adult dairy weight):

That is hay (forage) dry-matter planning. Goats also need free-choice loose minerals formulated for goats — always on in our assumptions. Sheep mineral is not a substitute (copper levels differ).

Other adult weights in our table: meat doe 120 lb, fiber 100 lb, mini 60 lb. Swap the weight; keep the same percentages.

One doe through winter

Default winter length in our data is 120 days with no pasture credit on the winter stack:

  • Daily (in milk): 5.2 lb
  • Winter total: 5.2 × 120 = 624 lb
  • At 50-lb small-square bales (our default): 624 ÷ 50 = 12.48 → plan 13 bales and expect some waste at the feeder

A dry 130-lb doe at 3.9 lb/day needs 3.9 × 120 = 468 lb10 bales for the same winter. The milking premium is real: lactation buys milk and burns forage.

Four does — the locked herd example

Our data file locks this worked example: 4 dairy does in milk, 130 lb each, 120-day winter, no pasture:

  • Each: 5.2 lb/day
  • Herd: 20.8 lb/day
  • Winter: 20.8 × 120 = 2,496 lb
  • Bales: 2,496 ÷ 50 ≈ 49.9250 bales (round up)

If you only mentally budget “a few dozen bales for the girls,” that herd example is why January feels short. Run your headcount and weights in the calculator instead of copying a neighbor’s stack size.

Year-round hay vs seasonal pasture

Without any pasture discount, one milking 130-lb doe eats:

In growing season, when browse and pasture are truly available, our model may cut hay by up to half (0.5 pasture factor). That is a seasonal relief valve, not a year-round free lunch. A rough planning sketch:

Your frost dates, drought years, and browse quality will move those day counts. When grass stops, return to the full 4% (or 3% dry) rate immediately.

Grain on top of hay

Hay is the base. Grain is the milking lever:

  • 1 lb grain per 2.5 lb milk → grain = milk × (1/2.5)
  • Default backyard milk assumption: 6 lb milk/day2.4 lb grain/day
  • Dry / maintenance goats: keep grain at or under 0.5 lb/day in our rules

A milking doe on skinny hay and heavy grain is backwards. Fix forage quality first; then dial grain to milk.

Alfalfa vs grass hay (quality, not just pounds)

Weight math assumes the hay is worth eating. Dairy does in milk often do better on legume or mixed hay with enough protein and calcium; dry does and wethers often thrive on sound grass hay. The body-weight percentage still applies — 4% or 3% of live weight — but a doe will waste stemmy, moldy, or weed-filled bales and then look “underfed” on paper.

If you change hay class midwinter, watch body condition for two weeks and adjust grain only after forage is fixed. Our calculator sizes pounds; you still judge quality with your hands and your extension forage test if the stack looks doubtful.

Bales, waste, and feeder design

Small squares at 50 lb are easy to count; big rounds need a scale or a dealer weight you trust. Waste matters: goats pull hay through panels and bed on what they refuse. A good feeder can reclaim a meaningful share of that loss — enough that buying “exact math” bales without a buffer still leaves you short.

Store hay off dirt, under cover, and away from the stall humidity that molds a stack. Moldy hay is not a bargain. Build a simple tally sheet: bales in, date opened, animals on feed. When the sheet says you are three weeks early to empty, you still have time to call the hay seller — not the emergency feed-store run at ice-storm prices.

Kids and late-pregnancy does often need the higher end of forage care even when the dry-doe 3% rate is your spreadsheet default. When in doubt for a milking or heavily pregnant animal, plan with the 4% dairy-in-milk rate and let body condition tell you whether to ease off after peak.

Mini goats at our 60 lb adult weight still follow the same fractions: in milk, 60 × 0.04 = 2.4 lb/day; dry, 60 × 0.03 = 1.8 lb/day. Meat does at 120 lb dry need 120 × 0.03 = 3.6 lb/day. Do not feed a Nigerian Dwarf like a full-size Saanen “because goats are goats” — scale the percentage to the scale.

Land and water sit beside the hay bill

If does graze, check whether the acres can carry them with the pasture stocking calculator — goats are 0.17 AU each under our NRCS-style table, with take-half-leave-half utilization. Overstocked pasture means you buy the hay you thought grass would replace.
