The 0.623 gallons rule

One inch of rain on one square foot of catchment yields about 0.623 gallons. Multiply by roof footprint square feet, annual inches, and system efficiency (default 85%) for yearly catch. Example: 1,000 sq ft × 30 in × 0.623 × 0.85 ≈ 15,887 gallons per year. Use footprint area, not the larger slope area of a pitched roof — the rain sees the horizontal shadow of the building.

Sizing a tank

Compare annual or monthly catch to livestock demand. Ten chickens and two goats need 10 × 0.08 + 2 × 2 = 4.8 gallons per day, or about 144 gallons in 30 days. A 275-gallon IBC tote then covers roughly 275 ÷ 4.8 ≈ 57 days if you never catch rain during that stretch — longer if storms refill it. Dry seasons need more storage or a well backup; wet climates can lean on smaller tanks topped up often. Common tank steps people shop are 275, 500, 1,000, and 2,500 gallons — pick the smallest that covers your longest expected dry spell at peak herd demand, then add margin for leaks and cleaning days when a tank is offline.

First flush and filtration

The first minutes of a storm wash dust, bird droppings, and roof grit. A first-flush diverter and leaf screens raise real-world efficiency toward the default used here. Keep tanks opaque or covered to limit algae. Untreated roof water is for livestock, gardens, and washing — not for drinking lines unless you follow a full potable treatment design and local code. Clean gutters before rainy season so your carefully sized tank is not half full of maple seeds and shingle grit.

Winter and heat

Freezing stops automatic waterers; tank heaters and break-ice routines keep intake up so animals still eat hay. Heat does the opposite problem for poultry — toggle the heat option to double chicken water in the animal module. Shade and multiple drinkers reduce fighting at the trough.

Legality of rainwater harvesting varies by state and sometimes by HOA. Confirm rules before you plumb a permanent system, and never cross-connect untreated cistern water into household potable plumbing.

When you expand a flock or add goats, rerun both modules. Catch stays fixed by roof and rainfall; demand climbs with every head. A yard that balanced on a 275-gallon tote at six hens may need a second tote — or a well backup — once you hit a mixed flock and a dry August. Keep a simple log of tank levels after storms so you learn your real efficiency versus the 85% planning default.
