Eggs per hen per year by breed class
Breed class sets the annual ceiling before weather adjusts the weekly pace. This tool uses 300 eggs/hen/year for production hybrids (Leghorn and ISA Brown types), 250 for dual-purpose favorites like Rhode Island Reds and Plymouth Rocks, 200 for heavier heritage lines, and 150 for bantams. Those are planning averages, not guarantees — management and age matter as much as the breed book.
Weekly math is straightforward: hens × eggs per hen per year × season factor ÷ 52. Example: ten dual-purpose hens in winter use factor 0.6, so 10 × 250 × 0.6 / 52 ≈ 28.8 eggs per week. The same flock at a year-round (factor 1) pace is about 48 eggs per week. Dozens per month are derived from the selected weekly rate using a 30-day month.
Why production drops
Day length drives the hen’s reproductive system. Without supplemental light, many flocks fall toward the winter factor used here (~60% of the annualized rate). Heat waves suppress appetite and lay; a hard molt redirects protein into feathers. First-year pullets usually peak; after year two, expect gradual declines. Broody hens pause entirely while they sit. Soft shells and thin whites often point to calcium, age, or heat stress rather than “bad breed.”
If you add artificial light in winter, keep total day length around 14–16 hours with a consistent schedule, and never leave lights on 24 hours. Sudden jumps in light can confuse birds; gradual changes are kinder. Light does not erase molt or extreme cold stress — it only addresses the day-length piece.
Feeding for production
Layers need a complete layer ration plus free-choice calcium. Protein shortfalls show up as fewer eggs and poor feather recovery after molt. Do you need a rooster?
No. Hens lay infertile eggs on their own. A rooster is only required if you want fertile eggs for hatching. Roosters can help with flock warning behavior, but they also add feed cost, noise, and sometimes aggression — check local ordinances before adding one.

Rough household planning: about two strong production hens or three dual-purpose hens cover a dozen eggs a week at year-round pace, before winter cuts. Families that bake often want a buffer — eggs also go to neighbors, dogs, and the compost when production spikes in spring.
